Buying used greens irons
Greens irons roll fine turf to improve smoothness and ball roll without lowering the height of cut. They range from dedicated ride-on rollers to roller attachments for pedestrian mowers and larger rollers for cricket squares.
Check the rollers for dents, flat spots and corrosion, as any damage transfers straight to the surface. Look at the roller bearings and the drive, and on ride-on units check engine hours, service history, the transport wheels or trailer and any hydraulics for leaks. Side-winder machines that roll across the direction of travel reduce turning marks.
Consider width, weight and how it gets between greens. Filter by year to narrow the list, and contact the dealer for photos of the roller surfaces.
